With climate change, grapes have started to grow better in Latvia

С изменением климата в Латвии стал лучше расти виноград

There are currently about 500 different varieties of grapes grown in Latvia. There are large and sweet fruits, as well as less tasty varieties that are suitable for making drinks. Warm weather creates good conditions for a fruitful harvest, reports rus.LSM.lv. This year was very good for growing grapes in Kurzeme and Zemgale, while in Vidzeme and Latgale, part of the harvest froze in the spring. Researcher at the Institute of Horticulture Dzintra Dekena said that the drought and heat helped those who did not have spring frosts get a good harvest this year. "The grapes have a very high sugar content compared to previous years. We measure it. The sugar content is good, the grapes are sweeter," she said. Gatis Kužums began growing grapes thanks to his father, who was also involved in this. At that time, there were about 20 varieties in the garden, and now the farm has about 500 different types. According to him, more and more people are growing grapes because it is fascinating. It is important to choose the most suitable variety for cultivation. Grapes for winemaking will not be as tasty and vice versa – those grown for food are not suitable for wine. "We have both garden and technical varieties – for the table, for juice, and for wine. You need sun, warmth and soil. This is what we have in Latvia. And, of course, varieties that are less susceptible to diseases and can withstand our climate. I will not say that only frosts in winter, the main thing is frosts in spring," said the chairman of the board of the Latvian Society of Winegrowers and Winemakers Richards Ivanovs. According to winegrowers, in order to get a good and large harvest, you need to regularly monitor the growth of grapes, and prune the vines if necessary. Do not forget that grapes love the sun. "There is a feeling that the climate is changing, and grapes are moving further north. I can say that our grapes are considered tastier because they have a better sugar and acidity ratio," shared Dzintra Dekena. Gardeners believe that this year's warm summer and autumn are a prerequisite for a good harvest next year.
