WIR: To cover production costs, a fattened pig should cost as much as PLN 9/kg

WIR: Żeby pokryć koszty produkcji, tucznik powinien kosztować nawet 9 zł/kg

According to WIR analysis, the loss incurred by farmers on pig fattening in the open cycle decreased by about PLN 20-25 per pig over the course of a month. However, the additional cost is still huge. As we read in experts' calculations, fattening based on own grains entails a loss of PLN 215 per pig, while using purchased grains on one pig we lose over PLN 140.

Smaller losses result from a slight drop in feed prices, but primarily from the falling prices of weaners – the rate adopted in the August calculation (PLN 340) is about PLN 40 lower than in July. Unfortunately, the falling prices of livestock work against breeders – the purchase price of fattening pigs adopted in August was PLN 6.60 net per kilogram, while in July it was over 25 groszy higher.

The most thought-provoking fact is that, with the prices of means of production assumed by analysts, the cost of producing one fattened pig is, depending on the model, PLN 8.35/kg (fattening based on purchased grains) and PLN 9.01/kg (fattening based on own grains). In this way, WIR experts showed what a huge gap separates breeders from even covering the costs.
