Prohibition in Warsaw – details of the project

According to information provided by Polish Radio RDC, the ban on alcohol sales would apply to stores throughout the city, from 11pm to 6am. The restrictions, however, would not apply to restaurants.

Warsaw City Hall spokeswoman Monika Beuth said the project would have to go through a complicated legislative procedure. The next steps include obtaining the opinions of neighborhood councils and the commander of the Warsaw Garrison. After these consultations, the project will go to the city council for a vote.

The final version of the document is still subject to change. Councilors have the right to submit amendments, and the ban itself could go into effect at the earliest three months after the adoption of the resolution.

Public support for restrictions

Earlier, the capital’s City Hall held public consultations on the nighttime prohibition.

A survey shows that more than 80 percent of Warsaw residents supported the introduction of such a restriction. The high level of acceptance indicates the high support of residents for the initiative aimed at improving the comfort of life at night.

Prohibition in other cities

Warsaw is not the only city in Poland where a night-time prohibition is planned.

On Wednesday, the decision to restrict alcohol sales was made in Konin. There, the ban will be in effect from 10 pm to 6 am and will cover stores and gas stations, with the exception of restaurants. The consultation process involved the city’s Youth Council, the Senior Citizens’ Council, as well as local economic institutions and residents.
