Will the next EU Commissioner for Agriculture be from Luxembourg?

Następny komisarz UE ds. rolnictwa będzie z Luksemburga?

As German media speculate, the most likely candidate for the next EU Commissioner for Agriculture is currently Christophe Hansen from Luxembourg. This name is most often mentioned in the context of filling Janusz Wojciechowski's position in Brussels.

The probability of the Luxembourger's election has apparently increased since last week, significantly. The EPP politician has now been officially appointed as a future member of the European Commission by Luxembourg's Prime Minister Luc Frieden. Both Frieden and Hansen announced this on the "X" communication platform.

Hansen, 42, is the son of a farmer. He was a member of the European Parliament from 2018 to 2023, where he served on the trade committee and as a substitute member of the environment committee. He is also the secretary general of the Christian Social People's Party (CSV). In the autumn elections in 2023, Christophe Hansen won a seat in the Luxembourg Chamber of Representatives. As a result of coalition agreements, the politician was selected as Luxembourg's candidate for the EC.

Whether Hansen will actually be proposed as Commissioner for Agriculture by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will become clear at the end of August or in September. However, it is known that his candidacy is not controversial. However, there are still a few other names in the running.
