The problem of mass occurrence of wild boars in urban areas has not existed since yesterday, but it has certainly been publicized in recent weeks and months. Not so long ago we reported how wild boars coexist perfectly with tourists in Krynica Morska. For several months, the disease has also been occurring en masse in the Tricity. We know from unofficial sources that the presence of wild boars in this area is causing increasing fear among residents – the animals do not only live in forests and parks, but also increasingly approach human habitations. Therefore, when we talk about the problem of wild boars in urban areas, we mean not only the risk of uncontrolled spread of ASF, but also the safety of residents.

Holidays with wild boars. An attraction for tourists, but in practice a threat of spreading ASF
This topic was raised during today's meeting of the Parliamentary Subcommittee on the welfare of farm animals and the protection of animal production in Poland and the fight against infectious animal diseases. Dr. Robert Mroczek from the Department of Agribusiness Economics and Bioeconomy of IERGIŻ asked about actions taken to limit the occurrence of wild boars in urban areas.
Trapping and pharmacological killing
As Hubert Hamulecki, head of the Hunting Department at the Ministry of Climate and Environment, explained during the meeting, due to the safety of residents, hunting wild boars in urban areas is sometimes impossible. This does not mean, however, that we have no means of controlling animal populations:
– The hunting law states that when the presence of animals poses a threat to residents, the starosta may issue an administrative decision to catch or shoot wild boars. For safety reasons, it is not always possible to carry out shooting. In this case, we have an alternative in the form of trapping animals. Until ASF appeared in Poland, it was possible to relocate caught wild boars, at this point caught wild boars are subjected to pharmacological killing so as not to pose a risk of transmitting the virus to other areas – said Hubert Hamulecki during the meeting.
