WHSmith profit edges up boosted by booming travel sales

WHSmith group pre-tax profit edged up as its travel sales continue to soar.

Profits increased by £1m to £46m for the year ending 31 August 2024, as group sales rose 7% driven by a 10% increase in its travel division.

Profits from the retailer’s travel arm profit rose from £47m to £50m, however, its high street operations saw profit slip from £24m to £22m.

WHSmith CEO Carl Cowling said: “We have ended the financial year in a strong position, delivering a performance in line with our expectations with good growth across our travel businesses. Our UK division performed particularly well over the peak summer trading period.

During the second half of the year, WHSmith opened 30 Toys “R” Us shop-in-shops in its stores and plans to open an additional 37 by Christmas 2024, bringing the total to 76.
