Whole Foods Market to open first smaller-format store

Whole Foods Market says it soon will open its first smaller-format store, Whole Foods Market Daily Shop, designed to bring fresh, high-quality ingredients to customers with a convenience that fits their fast-paced urban lifestyles.

The 9,101-square-foot store, at 1175 Third Ave. in New York City’s Lenox Hill neighborhood in the Upper East Side, is set to open at 8:30 a.m. Sept. 18, according to a news release.

Announced in March 2024, Whole Foods Market Daily Shop will provide a convenient option for grab-and-go meals and snacks, weekly essentials and a quick, easy destination to pick up ingredients to complete a meal — with all items meeting Whole Foods Market’s quality standards, the company said. The smaller-format stores will range between 7,000 to 14,000 square feet, or about a quarter to half the footprint of an average 40,000 square foot store, according to the release.

Whole Foods Market said features and product assortment of the Lenox Hill location include:

  • More than 400 local products from 100-plus Northeast-based suppliers, including New York-based favorites Family Farmstead Dairy, The White Moustache, Annie’s Ginger Elixir, Dam Good English Muffins and Mill Hollow Maple Syrup.
  • New local brands launching at the Lenox Hill location include Jack & Friends, P-Nuff Crunch and Mimi Cheng’s. Additionally, Talea Beer Co. is introducing its Lenox Hill Pilsner, which will only be available at the Lenox Hill location.
  • First Juice & Java venue in New York City, offering coffee, tea, juices, smoothies, sandwiches, soups and various desserts.
  • Launch of new ready-to-heat sous vide entrees and sides from the Whole Foods Market Kitchens brand.
  • Single-serve hot bowls and meals including health-forward Teriyaki Salmon, Falafel Tahini and Chipotle Chicken grain and protein bowls.
  • Whole Foods Market favorites, including an ample selection of fresh, seasonal produce, meat and seafood, prepared foods like sandwiches and prepacked meals, breads, alcohol and supplements, as well as a handpicked range of local specialties and the 365 by Whole Foods Market brand.

The first 300 customers in line on opening morning will receive a limited-edition tote bag, complimentary cold brew coffee from Nguyen Coffee Supply and muffins from Abe’s, according to the release.

Whole Foods Market said it is contributing in-kind products to support the work of The Bowery Mission, City Harvest and Gotham Food Pantry, as part of its ongoing commitment to supporting local communities. The three organizations will also pick up excess food from the Lenox Hill location as part of Whole Foods Market’s Grocery Rescue Program, and The Bowery Mission and City Harvest are Nourishing our Neighborhoods van partners.

The grocer also announced plans to open another Whole Foods Market Daily Shop location at 409 E. 14th St. in the East Village’s StuyTown development. This is the third New York City location confirmed by Whole Foods Market, following the recently announced Hell’s Kitchen location. Additional New York City locations and national rollout will follow, the release said.
