- There is still time to sow rapeseed in the western and southern regions. But in the eastern and northern regions of the country, sowing is already underway.
- Isn't it too early? No, the timing is right for some locations
The East is already sowing, but there is still time
At the end of last week, sowing began in the Lublin region and Podlasie, among others. Here, let us note that in the north-eastern regions, there is a smooth transition from harvest to sowing, because some farms were finishing their harvest just a few days ago. Last year, we had this situation all over the country, because harvest lasted in most regions until mid-August, and in many locations, harvest took place even in the third decade of August. While for most of the country this meant the need to prepare the field for rape very quickly after harvest, in the north-eastern regions it was associated with delays in sowing.
It is worth recalling here that the so-called official sowing dates indicate that in Podlasie rape is sown around 5-10 August, and in Lublin, Warmia and Mazury or in the eastern part of Mazovia until 15 August. At the same time, there is an ongoing discussion on the issue of sowing dates, not only for rape. The general opinion in the community is that these should be slightly postponed. We have already conducted such considerations on farmer.pl many times.

It is worth delaying the current sowing dates a little. A safe buffer will be a delay of about a week. If we were to rely only on last season, even sowings from the beginning of September in the west and south would defend themselves (and from the end of August in the north and east). But we do not know the future course of the weather. If we have a cool autumn or winter comes quickly, a greater delay in time will be quite risky.

How much rapeseed to sow per hectare? How to calculate the seeding rate?
This week, the eastern regions will be largely sown
For some growers, e.g. from the south of the country, it may seem that it is quite early. After all, it is August 12th. But in the north-eastern regions, it is already a very good time for sowing rape. Let us note that if we were to use a certain official nomenclature regarding optimal sowing dates, a few years ago we would have considered that, for example, in Podlasie we are already talking about slightly delayed sowing. If we were to compare the current sowing in these regions, we would have a situation such as, for example, sowing rape in Lower Silesia after August 25th, i.e. according to the previous sowing dates, slightly after the optimal date. So it is not too early for many locations in the east or north, although it is not late either. In this case, we can rather say that we are currently dealing with the optimal date.
Of course, the first to start sowing were those farms that sow larger areas of rapeseed. Many farms in the eastern and northern provinces are "preparing" for sowing this week. Generally, it can be assumed with a high degree of probability that, weather permitting, most of the sites in the north-east and eastern provinces will be sown by the end of this week. Next week, the first farms in the western and southern regions will start sowing.
