What salary is considered good in the largest European capitals?

Какая зарплата считается хорошей в крупнейших европейских столицах?

Opinions on what constitutes a good salary can vary greatly depending on a person’s profession, education and personal preferences, so Euronews Business uses estimates from recruitment agencies and expert opinion to find out what is considered a good salary in Europe’s major capitals. Any salary above average is considered a good salary, says Chris Chastain, research director at the Economic Research Institute (ERI). According to recruitment company Talentup, a good salary in Germany is considered to be between €64,000 and €70,000 per year gross. This equates to around €40,000 to €43,000 per year net, or €3,300 to €3,600 per month per person. “While the cost of living in Berlin has increased in recent years, the city remains less expensive than other major European capitals such as London or Paris,” Michael Stull, managing director of Manpower Group UK, told Euronews Business. In Berlin, the average salary for professionals is between 40,000 and 60,000 euros gross per year, which can be considered a good salary for a comfortable life. Research company HousingAnywhere reports that the average net salary in the UK was €2,725 last year. In 2023, when the average cost of living was €2,314 per month, a good salary was considered to be between €2,962 and €3,915 per month take home. Given that the average weekly gross salary in London was 23% higher than the UK average, a good salary in the capital is between €3,643 and €4,815. According to HousingAnywhere, the average monthly net salary in France is €2,587 in 2024. A good salary for a comfortable life in France is around €3,200 per month for a single person, or €5,600 per month for a family of three. However, due to the higher cost of living in Paris, it would take around €3,400 per month to live comfortably in the capital. In Spain, the average salary in 2024 is €1,785 net or €2,250 gross. A comfortable life requires around €2,700 net per person, or €4,000 per family. In Madrid, salaries are 18% higher than the national average, with a good salary of around €3,185 considered good. In Ireland, a gross salary of €4,100 to €6,000 per month is considered good enough to live comfortably, Instarem reports. In Italy, according to ManpowerGroup, a good salary for mid-level workers is typically €35,000 to €50,000 gross per year. According to Salary Explorer, a good salary in Rome is €3,750 to €5,690 gross. “Wages in Rome are generally lower than in northern European cities, but this is partly offset by the lower cost of living,” says Michael Stull, managing director of ManpowerGroup UK.
