What motivates Poles to change their car?

Co motywuje Polaków do zmiany samochodu?
  • Even though Polish roads are full of old cars, the prospects for the coming years are promising. A PBS study commissioned by Automarket.pl shows that as many as 62% of Poles plan to purchase a passenger vehicle in the next five years.
  • Nearly a quarter of respondents (23%) intend to do so within the next 2 years, and 15% want to make a purchase next year.
  • 4 out of 10 survey participants indicate the age of their current car as the main reason for replacing it.
  • The next planned passenger car will, in most cases, be a used vehicle – this is declared by 65% of those planning to buy it.
  • New cars are to be used for everyday trips to work (74% of responses) and during longer vacation trips (74%). Moreover, as many as 81% of Automarket.pl respondents plan to use them for everyday shopping.

The average age of a passenger car registered in Poland is over 21.5 years. Some of them are cars that have not been used for years, but are still included in the database of the Central Register of Vehicles and Drivers, which inflates the value. After deducting them, the average age of a car in Poland is 15.9 years. This is a lot, especially considering that vehicles driving on European Union roads are on average 12 years old.

Research commissioned by Automarket.pl, a platform belonging to PKO Leasing offering financing for new and used cars, indicates that as many as 62% of adult Poles plan to buy a car within the next 5 years. Nearly two thirds of them intend to buy a used car (65%), but one that is younger than the one they currently own. For 43% of respondents, the main reason for buying a car will be the age of the current vehicle.

– Although cars in Poland are older than those in other EU countries, our research clearly shows that Poles are ready for changes in their garages. This is good news for the entire automotive market, including automotive e-commerce platforms. A large percentage of people planning to buy a new vehicle in the near future is an opportunity for further dynamic development of Automarket.pl. Used cars sold on our platform are on average just over three and a half years old. We offer both new and used cars. The latter – with verified legal status, mileage and technical condition – says Tomasz Otto, director of the Strategy and Marketing Department, responsible for the development of the Automarket.pl platform, owned by PKO Leasing.

Price and safety determine the choice of model

What aspects do future buyers pay attention to? Price turns out to be the most important factor in choosing a specific model – 82% of respondents considered it to be very important. Interestingly, this trend continues regardless of whether they plan to buy a new or used car.

In the case of used cars, the key selection criterion is their technical condition and full service history. As many as 92% of respondents consider the verified condition of the vehicle to be the most important. 73% of them pay attention to the verified mileage of the car, and 1/3 of potential buyers (32%) pay attention to the warranty covered by the selected car.

Car safety turns out to be important, as indicated by 68% of respondents, and the same number pays attention to the costs of car servicing. Vehicle equipment is also important for future buyers – 64% of responses.

Interestingly, car aesthetics is an issue that is important to less than half of drivers – 45% of those surveyed for Autmarket.pl declare its importance. The data shows that Poles approach car purchases in a pragmatic way. Reliability and maintenance costs of a car turn out to be more important than stylistic trends or appearance.

– The increase in the costs of parts and service services in recent years has made customers look for reliable and technically proven vehicles. They want to be sure that their new car will not require large financial outlays for repairs – notes Tomasz Otto from Automarket.pl. – According to our data, the prices of car parts at dealerships have increased by 15-25% over the last two years, and the workshop man-hour has increased by as much as 38%. She contributed to this, among others: high inflation, exceeding 14%. Currently, costs are no longer rising rapidly, but of course they have not fallen to previous levels, he adds.

Poles want new cars, but they are looking for favorable financial solutions

According to research prepared for Automarket.pl, 72% of Poles have a passenger car, and 62% plan to buy it. Owning a new car does not have to mean a one-time, significant expense these days. Those interested in changing their car can use various types of financing, including long-term rental.

According to data from the Polish Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (PZWLP), every fourth new passenger car purchased in 2023 by companies and entrepreneurs in Poland is available for long-term rental. In terms of the total number of cars, the long-term rental market recorded a growth of 9% y/y in 2023. (PZWLP data).

– In the case of Automarket.pl, nearly 50% of cars are currently available for rental to drivers. These are both new and used vehicles, but thoroughly checked in technical and formal terms. More and more drivers are becoming convinced of this form of use. It does not pose any restrictions in everyday travel by car, and it has many advantages over traditional purchases. The most important thing is that in the event of a possible failure and the need for repair, the costs are borne by the rental company. What is also important – you do not have to pay the full amount at once to enjoy driving a more modern car – emphasizes Tomasz Otto.

The study conducted for Automarket.pl clearly shows that the availability of a passenger car is important for Poles in the context of their professional activity. More than 2/3 of those interested in purchasing a new car to commute to work. It should therefore come as no surprise that what people are looking for are cars that are reliable, efficient, economical, and, secondly, those that meet aesthetic preferences.
