What is the cost of pre-emergence herbicide protection in rapeseed?

  • What is the cost of herbicide protection for rapeseed before emergence?
  • Let's remember about the addition of an adjuvant, which will improve the quality of the treatment

Napropamide before sowing

One of the possibilities of pre-emergence protection, although rarely encountered, is the application of napropamide before sowing. Then, after the treatment, the agent should be shallowly mixed with the soil (to a depth of 3 cm) and then rapeseed should be sown. There are 6 preparations based on napropamide "solo" on the Polish market. The cost of such a treatment is about PLN 120 – 180/ha (at recommended doses of 2.4 – 3 l/ha). By applying napropamide before sowing, we will combat, among others, barnyard grass, but also cranesbill, chamomile weeds or cabbage weeds.

Napropamide is also available on the market with accompanying substances. However, in such a system it is used immediately after sowing (up to 3 days). Napropamide is registered by the manufacturer with clomazone or quinmerac, as well as with quinmerac and metazachlor and dimethachlor and clomazone. It is also possible to combine these substances on your own. Thus, the application of napropamide with clomazone will cost 150-160 PLN/ha. You can approach the procedure more comprehensively by combining napropamide with clomazone and metazachlor. Then, at the recommended doses, the cost of the procedure will exceed 200 PLN/ha (200-230 PLN/ha), but we obtain a very wide spectrum of controlled weeds, where there is a strong synergy of active substances. When using clomazone and metazachlor at the same time, we must be aware of certain side effects (including phytotoxicity in the form of discoloration).

Comprehensive and popular – chlomaton, metazachlor, pethoxamid

Clomazone and metazachlor are often used in combination. Such a mixture is generally considered comprehensive. And indeed, on many plantations it may be so, although everything depends on the specifics of the field. After all – it is a good, proven mixture. The cost of the treatment oscillates around PLN 150 – 180/ha, depending on the doses used. For example, clomazone at a dose of 72 g/ha together with metazachlor (800 g/ha) costs about PLN 155/ha.

The above mixture can be used together with pethoxamid. In such a case, you can apply, for example, clomazone at a dose of 70 g/ha, metazachlor 500 g/ha and pethoxamid (900 g/ha). The weed spectrum is then very wide, and the cost of the treatment will oscillate around PLN 200-220/ha. A common practice is a treatment using clomazone and pethoxamid in a duet. In such a case, the cost of weed control is around PLN 160-200/ha.

In Poland, pendimethalin is not registered for the protection of winter rape, but German recommendations sometimes mention its implementation in pre-emergence treatments. Here, let us add that according to such recommendations, it could be administered together with pethoxmid or metazachlor (as well as with clomazone).

Soil protection is not everything

In general, the cost of pre-emergence herbicide protection in winter rapeseed is usually in the range of PLN 160-200/ha. In this amount, we are already able to perform an application covering a wide range of weeds, on most plantations we are talking about comprehensive protection. However, let us remember that monocotyledonous weeds (e.g. self-seeding cereals) will be controlled in a separate treatment using graminicide. Basically, in rapeseed, unlike in the case of cereals or corn, the elimination of monocotyledonous species takes place in a separate application.

Regardless of the selected combination, it is worth adding an adjuvant, which will indeed slightly increase the cost of the treatment (although generally by a small amount), but in difficult conditions can significantly increase its quality. On the one hand, the herbicide will be stabilized in the soil, well distributed in the soil profile, on the other hand, we will reduce the risk of potential damage (e.g. due to higher doses of clomazone) or uncontrolled runoff of the herbicide into deeper layers of the soil profile, below the weed germination layers.
