Passion and genetics
As Felicjan Pikulik, president of the board of the Stud Farm in Dobrzyniewo, told us, such great success is the result of the hard work of the entire team, which approaches cattle breeding with passion.
– This requires people who live and breathe this breeding, who truly like it – Pikulik emphasized. – Secondly, we also need to know the genetic values presented by other countries and use their achievements, whether in the form of embryos or very good semen, which we can use in precisely planned matings on our own animals – he explained.
A key direction for Polish cattle breeding
In the opinion of our interlocutor, in the future of Polish cattle breeding greater emphasis will be placed on improving udder characteristics.
– Greater emphasis will be placed on conformation traits, especially the udder. Of course, knowledge of all the elements that determine success will be necessary, and therefore it is necessary to observe the best, because it is the least expensive lesson – he noted.
Profitability of milk production
When asked about the profitability of milk production, Pikulik emphasized that the level of profitability depends on many factors.
– Unfortunately, energy prices are rising, and this has a strong impact on the profitability of milk production. When it comes to the minimum level of profitability, it depends on many factors and the adopted system. It is worth remembering, however, that we can achieve profitability by selling milk, but also breeding material. Dobrzyniewo sells about 400 heifers and first-born calves per year to our breeders who want to populate their barns or improve their genetic value – our interlocutor pointed out.
The importance of well-being
Pikulik also emphasised that well-being has a major impact on profitability.
“While genetics obviously come first, welfare also plays a very important role, as the animals need to be comfortable to produce enough milk and be healthy,” he said.
– The efficiency in Dobrzyniewo is 13.3 thousand liters from 1 thousand animals. This is already a really high level, although it does not mean that the upper limit has been reached. We will work all the time and strive to ensure that the herd has beautiful animals that will milk beautifully and give beautiful economic effects – he added.
Development plans for the Stud Farm in Dobrzyniewo
Pikulik noted that the development plans for the Stud Farm in Dobrzyniewo include, among others, increasing the cattle herd and investing in solutions that will increase the precision of feeding control.
