We are old men. Iwan in Dyby about the powerful anti-agricultural lobby

Jesteśmy dziadami. Iwan w Dybach o potężnym lobby antyrolnym
  • Who makes money on energy and who blocks the development of green energy production?
  • Politicians can't do anything, or are they just pretending? Fortunately, there are also those who are not afraid of anything and say directly who did not and does not allow farmers to earn money from the production and sale of green energy. We applaud such politicians.
  • Marek Sawicki doesn't beat around the bush, he tells it like it is. Jacek Janiszewski also knows a lot, from the perspective of many years he knows what he meant when he wanted to help farmers. Iwański and Dyba present the statements of both politicians, comment and encourage current politicians to make bold decisions.
  • Energy cooperatives should be established in rural areas and district communes, which should collect funds for the production of electricity and produce it for their own needs, and in the case of surpluses, sell it to those who need it.

Once again, together with Iwona Dyba, we are taking up the energy market in our country. Why? First of all, we are still inspired by the conference we organized on this topic on June 20 this year. and the conclusions drawn from it. Secondly, former ministers of agriculture spoke on renewable energy sources during the debate that took place at the Warsaw University of Agriculture. We strike while the iron is hot, especially since the ministers are painfully honest, as you will see. They speak directly about the mechanisms operating at the intersection of economy and politics.

The fact that farmers could produce energy (electricity and heat) from biogas has also been written in hundreds of pages of paper scientific and online publications. Their effect is not satisfactory, because there are no more biogas plants, and the consumption of biogas in agriculture decreased in 2022 compared to 2017 (370 TJ – 395 TJ, source: IERiGŻ-PIB in Warsaw). Marek Sawicki, referring to these issues, said: "I'm tired of discussions, it's time to take action."

Coal, oil and renewable energy do not mix

The former Minister of Agriculture believes that farms engaged in animal production could be proud of the production of low-emission food (we have discussed this topic extensively, what low-emission food is and why we need to focus on it – if you are interested, please refer to these publications), remaining on the topic mentioned at the beginning.

Sawicki said that in 3-5 years we can have cheap energy from biogas and low-emission food. In his opinion, the problem is that today companies such as the one quoted here are fighting over biosubstrates: "Total, Shell, BP, Saudi Aramco, and Orlen knows nothing." – Farmers have to earn money from substrates, just like in other countries, let's give them a chance – argues the former minister. – A tribute to Marek – Jacek Janiszewski, who resigned from the office of Minister of Agriculture in 1998, commented on his words during the debate. He, in turn, wanted to take care of distilleries in Poland and introduce the obligation to add spirit to fuel, but he was not allowed to introduce legal provisions . Someone was supposed to lose $25 million a year and the case collapsed. To see Jacek Janiszewski's entire statement, please watch the video below. In any case, a shady business from the East based on agents slammed its hand on the table, pulled the appropriate strings, Janiszewski had to leave, the farmers and the distillery business went well. Looking back over the years, Minister Janiszewski realizes the financial importance of his resignation and today admits: "we can give the village alternative sources of income, including: so that we won't be grandfathers."

It already worked once, so maybe it will work again now

If you don't know what it's about, it means it's about money. Therefore, the ministers, Sawicki and Janiszewski, not only due to their ministerial experience, but also their age, can say directly what they think, sharing their knowledge and experience. Sometimes it takes years to understand what was behind certain decisions a decade or two ago.

Do you remember Ryszard Bodna, Self-Defense MP?

Ryszard Bonda concluded contracts for storing grain from state reserves in his elevators in Nowogard, Chojna and Potuliniec. In 2003, it turned out that the grain had "evaporated". The case was handled by the prosecutor's office. The whole of Poland watched the huge confusion on the grain market and the theft of state grain. This year, grain prices went up and the state Agricultural Market Agency decided to liquidate them in preparation for storing any surpluses in the next season. She was going to do it because there was no grain worth several million zlotys in the warehouses. Despite the pressure of the powerful lobby, someone was stubborn and ordered the grain to be sold, and it turned out that the gentlemen had been cheating on the state wages for years. There were even warehouses that had vertical boxes welded in, so you could see that there was some grain in them, but they were empty inside.

This case shows how valuable positions were for politicians not only in state agencies, but also in units controlling the agricultural market (the State Inspection of Purchase and Processing of Agricultural Products, which was replaced by the Inspection of Commercial Quality of Agricultural and Food Products). We remind you of the grain scandal because it shows, through a lens, how business and politics work. We see the same in the energy market – a powerful lobby has its hands on it, blocking the development of biogas and biomethane production in Poland.

Ministers, they know this. We are allowed to install small photovoltaics and some heat pumps, but we are not allowed to develop biogas plants. Perhaps the current ministers, Czesław Siekierski, after all, he is Marek Sawicki's party colleague, and Michał Kołodziejczak, Donald Tusk's right-hand man in agriculture, will bang their fists on the table. Gentlemen, we keep our fingers crossed, farmers are waiting.

We invite you to watch the next edition of the Iwan w Dyby program.
