Walmart opens high-tech perishable distribution center

Walmart recently celebrated the opening of its 730,000-square-foot perishable distribution center in Lancaster, Texas.

The new facility, located 15 miles south of Dallas, will receive and process fresh produce, eggs, dairy, flowers and frozen goods for delivery to nearby Walmart stores, according to a news release. This is the company’s second high-tech perishable distribution center in Lancaster, Texas, and its fifth overall.

The retailer says state-of-the-art technology will enable the retailer to process more than double the volume of a traditional distribution center. It will employ more than 500 full-time Walmart associates. The retailer also says the high-tech center helps build store-ready pallets by department, which will ease unloading and help maximize space on trucks.

“This is a game-changer for our city, blending our skilled workforce with cutting-edge technology to deliver fresh, high-quality food,” Lancaster Mayor Clyde C. Hairston said in the release. “Beyond innovation, this center will create sustainable jobs for our community and enhance access to nutritious food.”

Walmart says it will hire for tech-focused roles at the perishable distribution center, including automation equipment operator.

The retailer donated $5,000 to ConqHer, a professional development program, along with $2,500 to both the Lancaster police and fire departments, the release said.
