The Toyota Prius hybrid car has broken the Guinness World Record for the lowest fuel consumption. The record was set on public roads by American Wayne Gerdes, who drove from the US West Coast to the East Coast, from Los Angeles to New York, a distance of less than 5,200 kilometers. The average fuel consumption on this trip was 2.53 liters per 100 kilometers, which is significantly less than the automaker promises – the Prius "on paper" consumes 4.13 liters of gasoline per 100 kilometers. Representatives of the Guinness Book of Records monitored Gerdes' Toyota Prius' journey. They noted that the conditions were not the best: the route passed along roads at an altitude of 2,100 meters above sea level, and the air temperature sometimes reached 40 degrees Celsius. Both of these factors negatively impact fuel economy, but despite this, the average fuel consumption was only 2.53 liters per 100 kilometers, i.e. in some places it was even lower. As a result, Gerdes not only achieved a record low fuel consumption per 100 kilometers, but also exceeded Toyota's claimed range of the Prius on a full tank of fuel – 1,700 kilometers without refueling versus 1,036 kilometers "on paper".
