The State Revenue Service (VID) is considering eliminating 110 positions by the end of the year, the tax service reported. VID Director General Baiba Šmite-Roke explained that the goal of the tax service is to increase efficiency and productivity, which includes both reducing the administrative burden on clients by automating actions and revising the actions carried out by switching to digital tools that will save resources. Already now, the total number of full-time positions in VID is 61 fewer than at the beginning of 2024, as the number of people employed in the tax and customs blocks has been reduced. "Having identified chronically unfilled vacancies, we decided to eliminate them, if possible, increasing the salaries of those colleagues who actually covered this vacancy and are able to work effectively," Šmite-Roke noted. In the second half of the year, it is planned to reduce the number of employees in the so-called control block as well, since VID has learned to administer value added tax (VAT) more effectively. Šmite-Roke explained that this mainly concerns vacant positions, but the most important thing is the productivity of the employees' contribution, which is why changes in positions within the service are also planned. "Every experienced professional is important to us, so when reviewing the functions, we will offer our best employees other duties in accordance with their skills and knowledge," says Šmite-Roke. In addition, the VID CEO points out that the planned reduction of the aforementioned positions is not related to the separation of the Tax and Customs Police Department from VID.
