New Act
According to data from the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV), a total of 660,000 hectoliters of wine were produced in Ukraine in 2021.
Ukraine wants to get closer to the standards in force in the European Union. To achieve this, the parliament in Kyiv adopted the Law on Grapes and Wine Products. The purpose of the new legal solution is to implement the relevant EU legislation on grape growing, oenological practices and the use and protection of geographical indications of wine.
Implementing regulations
It is also planned to create a unified state register for vineyards and winemaking. The aim is to collect information on vineyards, their cultivation areas and products, as well as mandatory declarations regarding wines. The legislator hopes that this will translate into greater administrative efficiency and more targeted state support for vineyards and winemaking.
The law also contains implementing regulations on the production and distribution of wine and other wine products with geographical indications, which correspond to the regulations in force in EU countries. In particular, it is prohibited to mix Ukrainian wines with imported goods.
War losses also affected winemakers
Viticulture in Ukraine has also suffered as a result of the Russian war of aggression. According to the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV), a total of 660,000 hectolitres of wine were produced in 2021. At the beginning of the war in February 2022, the vineyard area covered 41,800 hectares of wine; now there are about 36,600 hectares.
