Canada and Mexico did not leave without attention the decision by U.S. President Donald Trump to impose customs duties on goods from these countries. China has also promised to take countermeasures
to protect its rights and interests.
Ottawa imposes responsive 25 percent duties on imports from the United States of goods for a total of 155 billion Canadian dollars (in translated – 106 106 billion dollars US or 103 billion euros), announced Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Saturday Saturday evening, 1 February.
Fees on goods for 30 billion Canadian dollars will become in force 4 February, and for the rest – after 21 days. The head of the Canadian government has urged countrymen to buy Canadian goods and spend the holiday in the nation, not in the United States, wrote DW.
Ottawa allows and other measures, including in the areas of important useful fossils, purchases of energy and other forms of cooperation with the neighboring state. In addition, Canada intends to work together with Mexico, which is also affected by duties from the US.
Mexico is open to dialogue
In the meantime Mexico will respond to Washington”tariff and non-tariff measures,” said President of Mexico Claudia Sheinbaum, directing the Minister of Economy to do so. At the same time she expressed openness to negotiations, explaining that the problems are resolved not through the introduction of tariffs, but through dialogue.
Trump sees threat of drugs and illegal immigration
A few hours earlier the President of the United States signed an executive order on duties on goods from two neighboring countries and China. The rate on products from Canada and Mexico will be up to 25 percent, on energy from Canada it is set at the level of 10 percent.
Trump explained his decision to the threat from illegal immigrants and drug smuggling. The President of Mexico responded by requesting the Chief of the White House to create a working group of specialists in public health and security.
“If the United States want to fight criminal groups, who are trafficking drugs and generating violence, we need to work communicatively, comprehensively, but always based on the principles of shared responsibility, mutual trust, cooperation and, first and foremost, respect for sovereignty,” Sheinbaum explained.
Beijing will complain to the WTO
China also reacted to the White House position, announcing “appropriate countermeasures.” In addition, the PRC will file a complaint to the World Trade Organization (WTO), a spokesman for the Chinese Ministry of Trade reported. The Trade conflict Beijing and Washington was escalating as early as Trump’s first term.
