Strengthening the position in the pork and beef sector
By taking over the Crailsheim location in Baden-Württemberg, Tönnies will not only expand its market position in the beef sector, but will also further strengthen its market position in the pork sector.
In mid-August, Vion announced the sale of the pig slaughterhouses in Landshut and Vilshofen to the Southern Bavarian Producers Association, which was already involved in both locations.
As part of the planned transaction, the Tönnies Group will acquire Vion's beef operations in Buchloe and Waldkraiburg, as well as the beef and pork divisions in Crailsheim. The acquisition also includes the cutting plant in Hilden, the BestHides hide processing operations in Memmingen and Eching-Weixerau, as well as most of Vion's German ancillary business.
Vion's announcement said it would retain its stake in the beef production facility in Furth im Wald, southern Germany. Vion's remaining German companies would continue to receive full group support, and all existing business relationships would continue as before.
After Tönnies had long been the undisputed number one in our slaughterhouse rankings in the pork sector, thanks to the current takeover Tönnies is now also the leader in Germany in the beef sector, with a clear lead over Westfleisch in second place.
The distance to other medium-sized companies is increasing
Furthermore, following the planned takeover, Crailsheim Tönnies will continue to strengthen its position in the German pig slaughtering rankings and further increase its lead over Westfleisch and other mid-sized companies.
With the entry into Crailsheim, Tönnies will now also have a pig slaughtering location in southern Germany, which, with a slaughter volume of around 1 million pigs per year, is of great importance for the local region of Baden-Württemberg and beyond. There are other pig slaughtering locations in southern Germany with similar capacity, for example only in Ulm (Müller-Fleisch) and in Vilshofen and Landshut.
If the Federal Cartel Office gives its approval, Tönnies will be the only slaughterhouse company represented throughout the entire federal territory: from Schleswig-Holstein via North Rhine-Westphalia and the new federal states to southern Germany, with important locations in both the beef and pork sectors.
