This year belongs to cereal viruses

Ten rok należy do wirusów zbóż

The high pressure of aphids recorded in the autumn of 2023 posed a major threat to winter crops. The warm autumn was exceptionally favourable for these pests and – importantly – scientists from IOR-PIB in Poznań had already signalled at that time that these were virulent aphids. This meant that they were carriers of viruses. – The results of molecular analyses of insect samples collected during autumn inspections of agricultural fields in various regions of Poland showed the presence of pathogens: Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus (BYDV), Wheat Dwarf Virus (WDV) and thus confirmed their infectivity – we could read in a phytosanitary announcement on the Pest Signaling Platform run by IOR-PIB in Poznań. Winter barley has been particularly infected with viruses, as it is the cereal crop most susceptible to the development of barley yellow dwarf disease (BYDV) and, due to its September sowing, is most susceptible to aphid attack.

Spring cereal observations

Although it is difficult to visually diagnose viral diseases in autumn, we could see their presence in spring, when barley resumed vegetation. Plants with symptoms of barley yellow dwarf virus lacked vigor. They took on an intense yellow color, over-branched, which caused changes in the shape of the plants. Many farmers wondered about the causes. Some farmers even decided to eliminate the most infected and unpromising plantations (this year, the share of plants with symptoms of virus infection often exceeded 80 percent).
