– In the latest report, we focused on purchases made at petrol stations. We checked which products are most frequently purchased by drivers while travelling and how their prices have changed over the last two years – informs Antonina Grzelak from the PanParagon application.
In the case of the most frequently purchased products at gas stations, receipts from gas stations with a purchase date from July 1 to July 31, 2024 were taken into account. So what do the study results say on this subject?
What do we buy at the gas station? TOP 10 products
The list of the most frequently purchased products at gas stations in 2024 is led by cigarettes. This is quite a surprise, especially in relation to previous editions of this study:
– In our previous analyses, in 2022 and 2023, cigarettes were in third place in both rankings. This year's advancement in cigarette purchases at gas stations may raise concerns, especially in the face of growing awareness of the harmful effects of smoking tobacco – notes Antonina Grzelak from the PanParagon application.
Energy drinks came second in the ranking of most frequently purchased products at gas stations. Third place belongs to hot dogs, and coffee, which also lost the battle against energy drinks, came just off the podium.
The most frequently purchased products at the stations also included salty snacks, sweetened drinks, water, casseroles, bars, and burgers.
The aim of the study was to identify the most frequently chosen products at petrol stations by drivers on the road, therefore alcoholic beverages were excluded from the analysis.
And how have the prices of the four most frequently purchased products at gas stations changed? To check this, experts compared data from July 2022, 2023 and 2024.
Cigarettes see record price increase
Among the products analyzed, cigarettes have seen the biggest price increases over the past two years. In July 2022, the median price for a pack of the popular brand of this stimulant was PLN 15.20, while in the same month of 2024 it was PLN 19.50. That's an increase of about 28.3 percent!
Coffee with milk at petrol stations has also seen significant increases. Over the past two years, this type of product has gone up in price by around 20%. On average, we will also pay one złoty more for a hot dog with sausage (+14.3%). Energy drinks have gone up the least among the products analysed by experts. The price of a 250 ml can of energy drink from one well-known brand has increased by around 90 gr on average since 2022 (+11.3%).
– It is surprising that despite the significant increase in cigarette prices, the frequency of their purchase at petrol stations has also increased. It is worth noting, however, that petrol station stores are not covered by the Sunday trading ban and are often the only place for so-called drop-in purchases. This may explain the high position of this type of product in our ranking – notes Antonina Grzelak from the PanParagon application.
