There is a shortage of fattened pigs on the market. Prices are up by as much as 30 cents

Despite the stabilization of prices on Western markets, the prices of fattened pigs in Poland are slowly but steadily rising. Representatives of purchasers with whom our editorial team is in contact do not hide the fact that the oldest of economic laws is at work here – it is increasingly difficult for plants to fully utilize the processing capacity of slaughterhouses, which is why some processors are forced to raise prices in order to encourage farmers to sell.

In the last week, the average purchase prices of fattened pigs increased by an average of 6-8 groszy, however, in individual purchases the increases amounted to as much as 30 groszy per kilogram.

Prices of fattened pigs at the end of September

According to our weekly survey, domestic purchasers are currently offering farmers from PLN 8.60 to PLN 9.20 net per kilogram of class E fattened pigs in the warm slaughter weight. The average purchase price for this class is PLN 8.90 net per kilogram. This is the highest rate since mid-July.

Live pigs currently cost from PLN 6.50 to PLN 7.20 net per kilogram. The average purchase price is PLN 6.91/kg – 6 groszy more than a week ago. In this case, too, we are talking about the highest prices in almost two months.

Forecasts for the future

Expert forecasts say that the first quarter of next year will see the peak of the downward phase of the "pig cycle", which means a large drop in prices. Will these forecasts come true? The argument in favor of this scenario is the significant increase in the number of sows recorded over the past year. However, the market is so unpredictable that it is difficult to estimate the scale of potential reductions.
