Temporary permit for insecticide
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, in response to the request of the Polish Association of Cereal Producers, issued a permit for the use of the insecticide Karate Zeon 050 CS from Syngenta to control aphids in autumn on winter barley plantations.
The permit is valid from 15 September 2024 to 30 November 2024. Autumn application is permitted from the pin-up stage to the end of tillering (BBCH 10-29) of winter barley. The recommended dose for a single application is 0.075-0.1 l/ha.

Protection against aphids needed
This permit is good news for winter barley producers who need solutions to protect crops from viral diseases. Aphids are, in turn, vectors of viruses that cause dangerous barley diseases, such as barley yellow dwarf and barley yellow mosaic. Since there are no chemicals that directly combat viral diseases of cereals, the only way to protect plants from viruses is to combat their vectors, i.e. aphids.
Winter barley is heavily infected in autumn, at early stages of development, which affects the further development of plants and their yield. The recent long and warm autumns have been conducive to aphid invasions, which is why it is so important to control pests already at this time. We could see the strong virus infection of crops and the effects of this condition in the 2023/2024 season, when the problem of intensive aphid raids was particularly severe.
