Empik enters the market with a new brand. What do they want to surprise this time?

– We ended 2023 with an EBITDA result of PLN 265 million and for the first time in history we exceeded PLN 3 billion in GMV, recording growth in all our channels and businesses within the Group. The results achieved are the best confirmation that we are on a good development trajectory and as an organization we are ready – operationally, business-wise, technologically – for further, profitable business scaling, responding very well to customer needs – says Ewa Szmidt, president of the Empik Group.

Multi-category offer

One of the key pillars of the Group's development strategy is the strong expansion of its multi-category product offer. In 2023 alone, the offer was expanded to include another 4 million products.

In addition to the publishing categories that have been available at Empik for many years (i.e. books, press, music), the Group offers an increasing range of products from categories such as Toys, Stationery, Sports, Electronics, Health and Beauty, Home and Garden and others that Together, they account for more than half of the Group's turnover.

At the same time, in 2023, traditional publishing categories recorded double-digit growth.

Omnichannel is the power of Empik

The development of the omnichannel ecosystem was one of the priorities in 2023 – consolidating the network of stationary stores, expanding the reach of the Empik.com platform and the Empik application, and further expanding the portfolio of services connecting shopping paths between sales channels.

The showroom chain closed the year with a sales increase of almost 13% y/y. The company continued to implement its expansion plan – during the year, 21 new stores appeared on the map of Poland under the Empik and Papiernik by Empik brands. As a result, the entire network has grown to over 350 locations by the end of 2023.

Empik.com recorded an increase in sales measured by the GMV index of over 28% y/y, while strengthening its position in the TOP4 of e-commerce platforms in Poland in terms of the number of users. This was the result of, among others, investment in the development of the platform itself. One of the growth levers of Empik.com remains the marketplace (EmpikPlace), which compared to the previous year achieved a GMV sales dynamics of 54%. The number of sellers present on the Empik marketplace and the offers they post increased by 57% and 60%, respectively, year on year.

The best converting channel in 2023 was mobile, which was responsible for the vast majority of all transactions on Empik.com. The Empik application has been downloaded over 12 million times so far.

The most frequently chosen form of delivery by Empik.com customers in 2023 was pickup in a stationary store, which accounts for almost 70% of all orders. More than 90% of such shipments were delivered via eco-delivery, without any additional packaging or fillers. For the remaining orders in 2023, a new, more ecological packaging standard has been implemented.

Customer shopping experience

In 2023, the number of buyers across all channels increased by over 2 million. Customer involvement, frequency of purchases and the number of active users of the Empik Premium subscription service also increased.

– Empik is one of Poles' favorite consumer brands with over 75 years of history. Brand recognition and customer trust are our strong distinguishing feature, but also a great responsibility. We are even more pleased with the high return rate of almost 75%, comments Ewa Szmidt.

In 2023, Empik's central warehouse handled over 11 million shipments to Empik.com customers as part of its own sales. At the same time, work on improving process efficiency started in 2022 meant that during the holiday season, the central warehouse was able to process volumes that were up to 40% higher year-on-year.

Empik Group goals for 2024

In 2024, the Group continues to further increase the scale of its operations. The strategy for this year assumes the expansion of the network of stationary showrooms by approximately 30 new locations. The company also plans to further accelerate the acquisition of new customers while maintaining high retention in both channels. Throughout 2024, Empik expects to maintain the Group's GMV growth rate at approximately 20%, similar to previous years.
