The volume of railway freight transport in Latvia fell by 22.4% in seven months

The volume of rail freight transport in Latvia in the first seven months of this year decreased by 22.4% compared to the same period in 2023, amounting to 6.894 million tonnes, according to data collected by the Transport Ministry, cites LETA. Of this, the volume of international transport amounted to 6.006 million tonnes, which is 25.9% less compared to the first seven months of last year, while the volume of domestic transport increased by 13.3%, reaching 888,000 tonnes. The information collected by the Ministry shows that the volume of transit cargo in the first seven months of 2024 amounted to 5.034 million tonnes, which is 29.4% less than in the first seven months of last year. In particular, the volume of rail transit cargo through ports in the seven months of 2024 amounted to 4.503 million tonnes, which is 31.8% less than in the same period last year, and land transit through the territory of Latvia – 531,000 tonnes, which is 0.4% more. Export transportation in the seven months of 2024 amounted to 1.18 million tonnes, which is 48.6% less than in the same period of 2023, and import transportation amounted to 4.295 million tonnes, which is a decrease of 18.6%. Earlier it was reported that in 2023, the volume of rail freight transportation in Latvia decreased by 27.6% compared to 2022 and amounted to 15.636 million tonnes, including in the first half of last year the volume of rail freight transportation amounted to 7.746 million tonnes.
