Although it cannot be used to chase a road pirate or even catch up with a thief fleeing on foot, a patrol tractor is useful for other tasks. It can go where no car can reach. Police officers from Derbyshire are to use Valtra to combat crime in rural and forest areas, the Daily Mail reports.
For now, the tractor has been rented to the police station free of charge by a local B&B Tractors dealer, but the authorities are considering purchasing the machine. The tractor has already been painted in police blue and yellow colors, equipped with a "rooster" and the necessary devices. Tests of the machine as a police car were reportedly successful.
The police tractor is also a hit at all local events, attracting crowds of curious people. It is used both for promotional campaigns and to secure mass events. It is particularly popular among children.
However, there are also voices that officials are only wasting time and money, and police officers should not "play" with the tractor but focus on more serious matters. There were comments that the whole idea was just a Piarist action. The police, in turn, refute the allegations that any way of reaching citizens is good. So far, the tractor patrol can't boast of any spectacular success, but who knows…
The Valtra police tractor is not the only agricultural tractor used by English services. Valtra T140, for example, has been serving valiantly for several years at Sidmouth Lifeboat, in Devon on the English Channel. The tractor is used to tow and take the rescue boat out to sea. In Poland, agricultural tractors are used, among others, in the fire brigade.
