Outbreaks of peste des petits ruminants in Greece and Romania
According to the information provided by the Chief Veterinary Officer, on July 12, 2024, Greece informed the European Commission about the confirmation on July 11, 2024 by the National Reference Laboratory for Peeste des Petits Ruminants in Greece of the presence of PPR virus in a farm located in the Kalambaka Municipal Department (Thessaly region, Trikala regional unit), where 264 sheep and goats were kept. It was the first PPR outbreak on Greek territory.

Moreover, on July 20, 2024, Romania informed the European Commission that on July 19, 2024, the National Reference Laboratory for Pestus Petits Ruminants in Romania confirmed the presence of the PPR virus on a farm located in Baia, Tulcea Regional Unit, where 51,119 sheep were kept. It was the first PPR outbreak on Romanian territory.
The number of confirmed peste des petits ruminants outbreaks is increasing
Until July 26 this year. 17 PPR outbreaks were confirmed in Romania, and 15 outbreaks in Greece.
According to GLW, all measures to combat PPR provided for in EU regulations – in Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2020/687 and the national regulations of these countries – were immediately implemented in all disease outbreaks.
The Chief Veterinary Officer ensures that he constantly monitors the epizootic situation regarding PPR and provides important information to the Veterinary Inspection bodies subordinate to him.
