The Ministry of Defence will support the innovative defence product projects of six Estonian companies that won this year’s defence industry development project competition, awarding them a total of over 700,000 euros in order to increase the development level and international competitiveness of Estonian defence industry products. A record number of companies took part in the competition this year, with 36 project applications from 34 companies. The six successful projects in 2024 will receive a total of over 700,000 euros. The grants range from 27,000 to 200,000 euros. “This year’s competition shows that there are many companies with great potential in this sector. The development of the defence industry is a priority for the Ministry of Defence. In addition to the development project competition, the ministry continues to support domestic defence companies, for example through various EU and NATO initiatives or within the framework of business diplomacy. “Our goal is an internationally competitive, export-oriented and highly developed defence industry in Estonia,” said Miiko Peris, Head of the Innovation Department of the Ministry of Defence. “Developing innovative high-tech products initially requires significant investments, but these investments, if carried out rationally, have an extremely high return, not only in financial terms, but also in terms of security and the additional benefits that Estonia can offer its citizens and allies. It is highly commendable that the Estonian defence industry is looking at the long-term perspective and supporting the introduction of innovative technologies. It is an honour for GaltTec to contribute to the future of Estonia,” said Glen Kelp, CEO and founder of GaltTec. “Threod is currently a prestigious supplier of launch systems in the global and rapidly growing loitering munitions market. The knowledge we have accumulated over the years will allow us to enter the market with a strategically important key technology – the container launch system – within the framework of the development programme of the Ministry of Defence. Together with our international partners in the defence industry, we will be able to offer complete loitering munitions solutions and participate in major weapons programs around the world,” said Robert Jacobson, Acting Head of Product Development at Threod Systems. The projects presented include electronic warfare systems, air, land and sea drones, loitering munitions, sights, fuzes, counter-drone systems, AI-based data analysis and management solutions, software for remotely controlled weapons systems, mine clearance solutions, weapon system components, decoys and decoys, and innovative shielding materials. The Defence Forces provide advice on the military aspects of the products being developed and assist in field testing.
