Regional Development and Agriculture Minister Piret Hartman addressed representative farmer organizations on Wednesday to get an overview of the situation caused by the floods and heavy rainfall that have fallen in Estonia in recent days.
As reported by the ministry's press service, Hartman calls on all workers in the agricultural sector to report their problems to representative organizations so that solutions can be found as soon as possible.
The letter sent to the representative organizations is the starting point for identifying the situation and finding solutions together with the sector.
“Currently, the combines are in the field, planning for sowing winter crops is underway, but the unusually high amount of rainfall makes it difficult both to harvest the crop and plan new work. It is therefore important to obtain an overview of the situation as soon as possible,” said Minister Hartman. – Damage varies from region to region. We are trying to find solutions to reduce the damage caused by extreme conditions."
The minister is also scheduled to meet with representative farmer organizations next week, but the minister is asking for information to be sent as soon as possible to identify problems and develop solutions.
“I encourage all agricultural workers to report their concerns to representative organizations. The sooner we get a more complete picture, the sooner we can move on to finding solutions,” Hartman urged.
According to preliminary data, the agricultural regions of south-eastern Estonia have suffered the most from excess moisture and flooding caused by heavy rains. Additionally, any information on other large scale weather damage incidents would be appreciated.
