The mineral fertilizer market in Poland. Has production fallen?

Rynek nawozów mineralnych w Polsce. Czy produkcja spadła?

Zalewski shared the data on social media, which is Linkedin. We have already published his calculations many times on farmer.pl, including those concerning the import and export of mineral fertilizers from our country. This time, the expert focused on the subject of production.

Production of mineral fertilizers in Poland in 2024

As Arkadiusz Zalewski noted, in the first half of 2024, due to, among other things, higher exports than a year earlier, domestic production of mineral fertilizers was higher than a year earlier. But there are also some buts…

– 1,076 thousand tons of mineral fertilizers in the pure component were produced – 24.6 percent more than a year earlier. Nevertheless, it was 27.4 percent less than in the relatively good 2021 in this respect and 18.5 percent less than in 2022 – Zalewski noted on Linkedin.

He added that in his opinion it should be emphasized that since April this year a systematic decline in production has been observed month on month.

Why has fertilizer production decreased in Poland?

– According to IERiGŻ estimates, in the coming months, domestic fertilizer production will probably be at levels comparable to those from a year ago, but higher than in 2022 (at that time, due to significant increases in gas prices, production, especially in August, September and October, was relatively small in terms of quantity), the analyst emphasized.

Arkadiusz Zalewski referred to the current gas prices, which are of great importance for the production of fertilizers, especially nitrogen ones.

– Current natural gas prices (TTF) are indeed at levels significantly lower than in 2022, but they have been rising significantly for about two weeks. Today (12.08) TTF gas prices are valued at over EUR 40/MWh (60% more than six months ago). Will this be an additional factor that, in addition to increased imports and rather weak demand (due to the situation on basic agricultural markets), will inhibit fertilizer production in Poland – asks Zalewski.
