The bison in Poland is an invasive species
The bison comes from North America. In Poland, they have been bred since 1934 in Białowieża. At the beginning of 2001, buffaloes were brought to Kurozwęki, where there is currently the only legal breeding of these animals and the so-called Bison Safari, where you can see buffalo.
As Piotr Kunert, deputy district veterinarian in Radomsko, told TVP 3 Kielce, bisons, as an invasive species, cannot remain in the wild in Poland due to the possibility of transmitting diseases and the risk of creating a crossbreed with the native bison. This would threaten the health and genetic purity of the Polish bison herd.
All animals were taken to "Bizoni Safari" in Kurozwęki, and the case was investigated by officials from Katowice and the police to determine whether the captured animals actually came from the mentioned farm. No buffalo was found on the farm.
