According to the latest data from the IRZ ARiMR system, as of July 31, exactly 49,311 herds of pigs were kept in our country. Compared to last month, we lost over 200 herds, and over the past year the number of herd headquarters decreased by nearly 3.5 thousand. This means that statistically, almost 10 breeders decided to suspend or end production every day.

The pig population is (relatively) stable
The decline in the number of pig herds did not have a particularly significant impact on the overall animal population. Although this indicator has fluctuated quite significantly over the past months, compared to the end of July 2023, the population is only 100,000 more. lower. However, the concentration of production increased significantly: at the end of July 2023, the statistical herd numbered 174 pigs, while twelve months later this indicator was 10 animals higher.
We fear for the future
Unfortunately, looking at the above data, it is difficult to be optimistic. Overall, the last two years have been a period of good market conditions. Although we can now forget about the price records we recorded last year, the decline in feed grain prices means that, according to many sources, you can still make decent money from fattening pig production. Therefore, the question arises: since during the good economic situation we lost about 7% during the year. Hence, what will happen when the long-predicted crisis arrives?

The drama of pig breeders in the Gniezno district continues. "No one counts losses anymore"
Economics is economics – breeders have already become accustomed to market turmoil, and years of operating on this difficult market have made every producer know only too well that they should be ready for difficult times at any time. The ASF currently affecting our country adds fuel to the fire. First of all, Greater Poland – an area that is currently leading in terms of pig production. It must be said clearly – the balance of disease occurrence in this region will be much greater than the dozen or several dozen herds in which the disease occurred. Another hundreds, or perhaps thousands, of farms will remain affected by the effects of outbreaks, ranging from herd blockade to lower purchase prices of fattened pigs from zones. For some breeders, this is already an incentive to consider ending pig production. We will know the true scale of the problem in a few months.
