In late January the government decided to add a new island
to the list of small islands in Estonia, which would allow the local government to apply for more funding.
At a government meeting on 23 January was approved an amendment to the Osmussaar Island, located in the county of Lääne-Nigula in Läänemaa, was included in the list of small islands. The list includes small islands with at least five permanent residents, according to the population register.
Small islands may be included in the list of small islands if their area is less than one hundred square kilometers and, according to the population register, they have at least five permanent residents. The reason why Osmussaar has been listed is that, according to the register of population, as of January 1 of this year there weresixpeoplelivinginOsmussaar.
