German drugstore chain in Poland. Start-up costs astronomical amounts of money
dm expansion accelerates
– We currently have 32 stores in Poland. We have a busy time ahead of us, because by the end of the year we want to have a total of about 50 drugstores, including several in the Mazowieckie province – says Marcin Detko, director of dm's expansion area in Poland.
– So far, we have developed mainly in the south-western part of Poland and these regions will remain key for us. At the same time, however, we want to mark our presence in new provinces, especially in the center of the country. We receive many questions about when dm will open stores in individual cities. Warsaw is one of the locations that appears most often in these questions – adds Marcin Detko.
DM drugstores are looking for new locations
Due to their dynamic development, dm drugstores are constantly looking for new locations. The optimal area should be around 600 sq m, due to the high quality of the shopping experience that the brand provides to its customers. The most desirable spaces include parks and shopping centers, located both in city centers and in housing estates, such as Centrum Łopuszańska 22 in Warsaw.
dm is also developing an online store and its own application. This is an important element of complementing stationary sales, which allows reaching customers regardless of where drugstores are opened.
What distinguishes dm on the Polish market is its unusual pricing policy. Drugstores guarantee a permanent shelf price, which is not increased for a period of at least 4 months from the date of the last increase visible for each product. The second distinguishing feature is the offer of discount coupons in the dm application and additional PAYBACK coupons.
dm drugstores have over 4,000 points of sale, employing over 79,000 people throughout Europe. In the 2022/2023 financial year, dm recorded sales of 15.9 billion euros generated in all 14 European countries. In the same period in Germany, around 51,000 employees generated sales of 11.4 billion euros.
During the extended financial year (January 2022-September 2023), the Polish company DM-Drogerie Markt incurred a loss of PLN 121.2 million (compared to a loss of PLN 9.7 million a year earlier). The company intends to open new branches, and as a result, the management expects an increase in stationary and online sales and an increase in market share. The loss will be covered from future profits.
