Theft is not only a financial loss, but it also causes property owners a great deal of uncertainty about the future. Over the past several months, we have been asking farmers if they have been affected by a similar incident.
It turns out that the most frequently stolen items on farms are:
- Power tools (welders, wrenches and other workshop tools)
- Fuel
- GPS antennas
- Fertilizers and plant protection products
- Metal elements (reinforcing bars, metal construction elements or even fences are targeted by thieves who sell them for scrap)
Mr. Sławomir, a farmer who manages 250 ha in the Pomeranian province, says that until now they could be calm and no major incidents, apart from minor thefts committed by rotating seasonal workers, had occurred. Until the moment when their farm was seriously robbed.
– In our absence, thieves took fertilizers and plant protection products of considerable value from the warehouse. The case was reported to the police – say the owners of the farm.
Since the case is ongoing, the farmer did not want to provide details. After the incident, monitoring was immediately set up.
– After such a situation, you lose confidence and start thinking about securing yourself against another potential theft – added Mr. Sławomir.
Easy-to-carry tools?
Another story was shared with us by Mr. Marcin from the Mazovian province, who had a large sum of tools disappear from his workshop.
– We still work with older machines, so sometimes we have to repair or weld something ourselves, so the workshop was quite well-equipped. I don't know if it's a coincidence, but some time after one of the employees was fired, the most valuable equipment also disappeared from the workshop. We reported the matter to the police, but let's not count on it being solved – explained the host.
Fortunately, there are also stories that ended in success and the stolen equipment was found. This was the case of one of the farmers whose GPS equipment was stolen. Thieves who disassembled an old plate rack and wanted to sell it for scrap were also punished. Unfortunately, their "lack of professionalism" made it easier for the police to investigate.
