- IUNG-PIB prepared the 7th drought report for the period from May 21 to July 20.
- Drought is still reported in 8 voivodeships.
- It has already been confirmed in 12 crops, including for the first time this year the report mentions drought in potato cultivation.
As we read in the latest IUNG-PIB report: the greatest water shortages from -160 to -209 mm were recorded in the Masovian and Podlasie Lowlands, the Lublin Upland, Polesie and the Sandomierska Valley. In the south of the country and in western and north-western Poland, the water deficit was the smallest, ranging from -50 to -119 mm. In the rest of the country, water shortages for crops ranging from -120 to -159 mm were recorded.
Storm fronts brought rainfall almost all over Poland
The situation was changed especially by rainfall occurring in the second decade of July. Very heavy rainfall was recorded throughout the country, ranging from 30 to over 100 mm. Only in places in a relatively small area rainfall of less than 5 to 30 mm occurred (the western part of the Szczecin Lowland and Kujawy, the southern edge of the Masovian Lowland and in the Sandomierska Valley

Corn benefited from water
The rainfall helped mainly corn. They came at the last moment and saved the yield of this crop from a significant reduction in yield. Of course, not everywhere had enough water to fall to improve its condition. According to IUNG-PIB, in the seventh reporting period from May 21 to July 20, 2024, drought in both grain and silage corn cultivation was recorded in 352 communes (14.21% of Polish communes). There was a reduction of 19.14 percentage points compared to the previous reporting period. The corn is currently budding and seeding the cobs, and access to water gives hope for good cob development. Of course, in regions where water deficit has negatively affected the vegetative development of plants, rainfall is no longer able to make up for these arrears. Permanent water shortage also means a long-term deficiency of nutrients that the plant cannot absorb at that time. This will have an impact on the yield of this crop.

The potato appeared for the first time
Drought was recorded in potato crops. So far, it has been recorded in 2 communes (0.08% of Polish communes) and it concerns the province. Masovian Voivodeship. A smaller harvest than the long-term average is expected in this region. However, where there has been a lot of rainfall recently, it has stimulated the activity of potato blight, which is currently causing, among other things, premature drying of the leaves. Drought in sugar beet has not yet been confirmed, as it reacted strongly to water shortages during the greatest heatwaves. In some places, the oldest leaves in the rosette were damaged and they are now dying.
