The hunt for a calf that had been scratched 10 weeks earlier from a farm in Walkenried, in the district of Göttingen in Lower Saxony, was finally successful. The animal had been successfully hiding on a rapeseed plantation, and the abundance of food in the surrounding pastures and fields did not encourage it to return.
As reported by Agrarheute, a four-month-old calf escaped from the farm at the end of April. From then on, they were often seen many times in the fields and meadows on the border of Lower Saxony and Thuringia. Attempts to capture it, however, ended in failure because the animal hid in the forest or rapeseed fields. As a result of one such attempt, the calf almost fell under a car on a nearby road.
However, the calf did not starve and grew like a weed. Its larger size allowed it to be spotted in a 10-hectare rapeseed field. The owner of the plantation had a lot of resentment towards the cattle breeder due to the destruction, and he also wanted to solve the problem before the harvest. They both went to a vet for help, who advised them to hire a specialist.
So the farmers enlisted the help of a man who has a license to euthanize animals using a pneumatic weapon and knows how to use a drone. With the help of a drone, he precisely located the bull and fired an accurate shot with a tranquilizer. The sleeping animal was then packed into a trailer and taken to a local farm. As it turned out, the calf weighs about 200 kilograms and is in good condition. However, it is difficult for him to get used to life in the farm again.
