Energy system operators of the Baltic countries intend to notify Russia and Belarus of the non-renewal of the BRELL agreement and withdrawal from it in February 2025. The letter signed by the heads of the Lithuanian electricity network operator Litgrid, the Latvian company Augstsprieguma tīkls and the Estonian Elering was reported by Lithuanian Energy Minister Dainius Kreivis in his account in Facebook on Tuesday, July 16th. “Today, the operators of the Baltic countries signed a document officially informing the parties to the BRELL agreement about their decision not to renew the agreement. In February, joint testing by the Baltic countries of isolated operation and disconnection,” Kreivis wrote. According to BNS, a letter of non-renewal of the BRELL agreement is planned to be sent to Russia and Belarus on Tuesday. "We are leaving BRELL. It seems like just a couple of pages and a few signatures, but behind them are many years of careful political and resource planning, long negotiations, calculations and persuasion, intimidation and blackmail, not always easy implementation of projects and, of course, always solid knowledge that just as we became part of the European Union and NATO, we will become part of the European electricity system,” notes Kreivis. The Baltic countries must notify Russia and Belarus of non-renewal of the BRELL agreement by August 7, six months before the scheduled synchronization. Last August, the prime ministers of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia signed a declaration committing to synchronize the Baltic states' power grids with Western Europe by February 2025. In December, this was enshrined in a declaration by the European Commission and the energy ministers of the Baltic countries and Poland. Previously, synchronization was planned for the end of 2025.
