An EU plan to add an emissions tax to transport fuel prices from 2027 could raise petrol and diesel prices by around a third. Heating buildings is also becoming more expensive.
Experts have calculated that, for example, diesel fuel in Europe could rise in price by 50 cents or more per liter by 2031 as a result of the introduction of a new tax. At the same time, in six years the price of diesel fuel could rise by more than 80 cents per liter due to a sharp increase in the price of emissions allowances, which would lead to the price of diesel fuel in Estonia more than doubling.
But that is not all. In the coming years, Estonia will increase the excise tax on diesel fuel, and the EU also plans to increase the share of biofuels. These measures will also lead to higher fuel prices.
