Tesco more than doubles size of new online marketplace

Tesco has more than doubled the number of products available from third-party sellers on its new online marketplace in less than two months.

Customers can now shop from over 20,000 SKUs across garden, DIY, homeware, toys, sports, baby, beauty and petcare, The Grocer reported.

The UK’s biggest supermarket chain launched a new marketplace at the beginning of June, listing products from external sellers who fulfil orders directly to customers.

Tesco initially launched with 9,000 products, which has since rocketed to over 20,000.

In June, the supermarket’s CEO Ken Murphy said the business was not trying to replicate Amazon with the new marketplace and “be all things to all people”.

“The primary focus of marketplace is to build out and extend the range of food, food related and home products available to customers – so to be very clear, we are not trying to be Amazon,” he said.

Murphy said the grocer was making “all of those niche products that you won’t necessarily find on our shop shelves” available to shoppers.
