Coffee concept in a new version. Tchibo with a new location
The new packaging, made of recyclable materials, will replace the existing composite film, which cannot be recycled. The initiative, which has been in place since 2023, will initially cover three product lines: Tchibo Barista Espresso, Tchibo Barista Caffé Crema, Caffissimo Espresso capsules and Caffissimo Caffe Crema (from mild to strong). Packaging Day, celebrated in September, is the perfect time to highlight the great importance of packaging in today's reality.
– Taking steps to introduce recyclable coffee packaging is another expression of our full commitment to achieving sustainable development goals. This change will contribute, among other things, to reducing carbon dioxide emissions. It is also a response to the expectations of customers who increasingly choose brands that are aware of their responsibilities towards the planet – emphasizes Paulina Iwaszko, PR, CSR and Corporate Communication Manager at Tchibo Warsaw.
Goal: reduction
On a daily basis, Tchibo, not only in the area of coffee, implements a sustainable development strategy, thus participating in achieving the goal set out in the Paris Agreement (2015), which is to limit the increase in global temperature to an average of 1.5 degrees Celsius. The company has committed, among other things, to reduce energy consumption by 10% by 2030 compared to the level in 2018. Additionally, by 2030, Tchibo plans to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in scope 1 and 2 by a total of 51%, and in scope 3, covering the entire supply chain, by 42%, also compared to 2018[2].
Given that more than 80% of Tchibo’s carbon dioxide emissions (Scope 1, 2 and 3) are generated by coffee cultivation, textile production and other products, the company implements a range of initiatives to support suppliers, including coffee farmers.
Tailor-made support
Tchibo has been taking action to make coffee production more sustainable and socially responsible for years. In 2024, the Tchibo Coffee Program was launched, which is to enable assistance tailored to specific needs. – In the face of dynamic climate change and the economic challenges faced by growers, the actions we have taken so far are proving to be insufficient. The Tchibo Coffee Program is a global initiative that is to cover all our partners, i.e. approximately 75,000 small growers living in various countries, including Guatemala, Honduras, Vietnam and Brazil, each of whom struggles with different problems – adds Paulina Iwaszko.
The Enveritas organization is to help identify challenges and create solutions that support sustainable production methods and improve the living conditions of agricultural communities. It monitors the effects of implemented initiatives on a daily basis, checking whether they bring tangible benefits to both the environment and farmers. The implementation of this program is to contribute to achieving another ambitious goal. The company consistently strives to ensure that by 2027 all the coffee it offers comes from responsible sources[3].
