Stiff competition: over 700 candidates competed for eight places on IT internships

Жесткая конкуренция: более 700 кандидатов боролись за восемь мест на IT-стажировке

In IT-industry Latvia a contradictory situation is emerging – while there is still a lack of experienced specialists, Competition at the level of newcomers is increasingly fierce, noted representatives of the insurance company If Apdrošināšana. This trend is confirmed by high interest in the educational program If Apdrošināšana If Apdrošināšana – IT Trainee Program. A record 700 candidates applied for eight positions and 328 of those 328 chose testing,
and 386 programming. The demand for IT specialists is changing: with each year the number of vacancies is decreasing, especially for newcomers. At the same time the active promotion of professions in IT and calls for reskills continue, which puts the question is how are these calls
aligned with the real opportunities that the industry offers? “This is the 12th time we’ve conducted this program. In the previous recruitment there were 180 applications, that is, interest increased almost four fold. To understand the reasons, we did a survey of the candidates. We found that for 56% of the most problem when beginning a career in IT is the lack of internships and of first level jobs. We as an employer recognize our role in solving this problem and try not only to provide theoretical knowledge, but and offer real practice and potential
career opportunities,” explains Janis Kesteris, Head of IT-direction If Apdrošināšana in Baltia Janis Kesteris. Previous programs have showed good results: of 90 participants more than half subsequently joined the teams of If developers. More more than one of the 2018
alumni recently received the If Stars Award as Collaborator of theYear, which confirms the long-term impact of the program. This year’s Finalists represent different professions: they include experienced specialists from other fields, who have decided to change careers, and students in IT fields. For example, the successful candidates included a translator with experience of testing and a project manager in a government agency, who had learned the required skills on their own. This wide spectrum of
participants reflects the approach if the If – to evaluate not only technical knowledge, but and motivation, flexibility and the ability to adapt to a quickly changing industry. In this year, the program began with eight interns, who will study theory
and participate in the development of real projects. In addition, they will participate in a variety of internal events so that they can get to know the team and the corporate culture better in an informal setting. “We consciously continue to invest in quality educational programs, which provide young professionals the opportunity to gain practical experience in a supportive environment. “Despite the slowdown of the market,

thesituationcouldunexpectedlychange.”It is thereforeimportanttomaintainalong-termlookatthedevelopmentoftalent,”Kesterisstresses.
