Increase in harvests of all cereals

Compared to the previous year, harvests of all cereals are expected to increase, but barley and oats are the most significant. Winter cereal production, including all barley production in Spain, is estimated at 16.16 million tonnes in 2024. This would exceed the previous year's level by 86%.

Higher yields, but yields below long-term average

The larger harvest is primarily due to improved yields per hectare; according to ministry data, the area under cultivation increased by only 1.1 percent in this year's harvest. Despite the huge increase in production, the volume expected in 2024 is expected to be lower than the long-term average. In Spain, winter cereals have been harvested on average 5 percent more over the past five harvests.

Harvest forecasts for individual cereals

The ministry expects a volume of 7.24 million tons of barley. That would be almost 91 percent more than last year. This year's soft wheat production is estimated at 6.26 million tons, which would be 77 percent higher than in 2023. In the case of oats, the ministry expects production in the current season to increase by 141 percent year-on-year to 1.11 million tons. Production of durum wheat and triticale is also expected to increase by around 70 percent each, to 727,700 tons and 612,600 tons, respectively. For rye, the ministry forecasts a harvest of 214,600 tons, which would mean a 78 percent increase compared to the previous year.
