Soybean Harvest is underway. See how to harvest and dry soybeans

Just about a decade ago, it was said that soybean cultivation in Poland makes sense at most in Lower Silesia. Meanwhile, today it turns out that the importance of this species in Polish fields is growing dynamically, leaving sunflower far behind, with which soybean "went neck and neck" in terms of cultivation area for the first few years. Despite obvious advantages, such as low doses of nitrogen fertilization or a small threat from agrophages, soybean also has certain shortcomings, especially at the harvest stage, therefore, when starting it, it is worth taking care not to inadvertently ruin the work of the entire season.

Soybean harvest date

Soybean harvesting is most often associated with September in Poland. Depending on the variety and the weather during the growing season, the time difference can be significant, and in order to maintain the best quality parameters of seeds, it is not worth being guided by the calendar. A signal of approaching harvest is the drying of plants and the falling of leaves. At this time, the pods take on a yellow-brown color, and the seeds harden and a characteristic "mark" is revealed on them. Seeds ready for harvest, with a moisture content of 15-16 percent, are difficult to crack, and when moving the pod, you can hear a characteristic rustling sound.

Harvesting too early means that the seeds will still be immature. Their moisture content will be high, which will generate significant drying costs, and biochemical processes will also occur in them that have a negative impact on quality. On the other hand, starting the harvest too late is a risk not only of pods cracking and seeds shedding, but also of mechanical damage during threshing in the form of halving. As for soybean shedding, this is largely a varietal characteristic.
