Sick wild boars dumped near Gniezno? Fortunately, it was a false alarm

Chore dziki podrzucone pod Gnieznem? Na szczęście był to fałszywy alarm

According to reports from the Moje Gniezno portal, three dead wild boars were found on Wednesday afternoon on the road connecting Gniezno with the town of Zdziechowa. The situation – unsurprisingly – sparked a lively reaction from the local community, with the police, fire department, district veterinarian and even Deputy Minister of Agriculture Michał Kołodziejczak immediately notified.

Were the wild boars abandoned?

There was a suspicion – although we do not know on what basis it was drawn – that the animals were supposedly dumped in the area. The portal's publication even states that "It is certain that the animals did not die in the place where they were found, which suggests that they were deliberately dumped."

This thesis seems to be contradicted by the words of Dariusz Nowaczyk, district veterinarian in Gniezno. In a conversation with our editorial team, the specialist confirmed that the allegedly abandoned wild boars had injuries clearly indicating death as a result of a road accident (including crushed ribs, destroyed lungs, numerous hemorrhages). Additionally, as the specialist indicated, consultations with the local hunting community confirmed that the place where the dead wild boars were found is close to a feeding ground and animals have been observed running through this place on several occasions.

Ultimately, as Dariusz Nowaczyk informed us on Friday afternoon, tests for ASF infection in all three animals gave negative results.

Will there be a continuation of the case?

What is intriguing, however, is that according to the portal's reports, the surrounding buildings are equipped with monitoring, which – to quote the portal – "enabled the quick identification of suspects in this case." We do not know for sure who the suspects are, but we will be watching closely to see if the police investigation sheds new light on recent events.

ASF in the Gniezno district

Ultimately, the case ended in a false alarm, but the tension that every case of finding a dead wild boar, especially in this area, is not surprising. Let us recall that the Gniezno district keeps over 100,000 pigs on its territory and is among the twenty districts with the largest pig production. The vigilance of the local community is additionally increased by the fact that 6 outbreaks of ASF in pigs have already been recorded in the district (in the Kiszkowo commune) this year.
