An analysis of car sales through dealer networks in May revealed several trends that were natural for the end of spring, such as a decline in buyer activity and some market subsidence. In general, the market is developing in a positive way.
According to BAA statistics, dealer sales of new cars in May amounted to 3,744 units, which is twice the results of the same period last year.
Compared to April, the sales level decreased by 5.6%. This is not the best indicator in terms of seasonality (last year, as in 2017-2018, the May indicators were higher than the April ones, in 2019 and 2021 – lower). But in this case, this is rather a private problem of a shortage of cars at car dealers and an increased number of days off during the month.
Changes in the market structure continue. In May, classes C and SUV B sank; at the same time, the share of class B increased. Some recovery is also noticeable in the class of light commercial vehicles.
The entire market of the Republic of Belarus can be divided into the following three components.
The first segment is the Geely brand (together with Belgee), which has dominated the market for several years. In 2024, there has been a decrease in the brand's share of sales, but a reduction in the lending rate for sedans may change the situation in June.
The second segment is “new” Chinese brands that appeared on the market in 2022-2024 and continue to appear and occupy a certain, although not yet the most significant, market share.
The third component is the segment of traditional European brands, the share of which decreased over the period 2021-2023, but has stabilized this year.
In general, in May the market approached the sales levels of 2021. From January to May, sales amounted to almost 16.0 thousand cars, which is 2.3 times more than in the same period last year.
