The New York Times reports that the US Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) have agreed to investigate Microsoft, OpenAI and Nvidia's dominant role in artificial intelligence, Reuters news agency reports.
The Justice Department is expected to lead an investigation into whether Nvidia violated antitrust laws, according to the newspaper's sources. The FTC is to investigate the activities of OpenAI and its shareholder Microsoft (which has a 49 percent stake).
According to The Wall Street Journal, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is also expected to investigate Microsoft's 650 million dollar investment in the startup Inflection AI.
Reuters notes that recent reports indicate growing regulatory interest in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). The agency recalls that last week, Jonathan Kanter, the head of the antitrust authority, spoke at an industry conference about "DI structures and trends that should attract attention." He pointed out that technology based on huge amounts of data and computing power gives the currently dominant companies a big advantage.
Microsoft and Nvidia are now the most valued American publicly traded companies. Each of them is worth more than 3 trillion dollars.
