Rapeseed is falling poorly. There are no revelations, the yields are low

Rzepak sypie słabo. Rewelacji nie ma, plony są niskie
  • What are the rapeseed yield results in the south-western regions?
  • The results of the harvest so far are far from expectations.

Rapeseed, like barley – excellent yields

So far, the harvest does not usually bring great results. Yes, there are good results, but unfortunately not very often, and very good yield results are only exceptions that prove the rule. We check the yield results in the south-western regions.

This year's harvest in Lower Silesia is lower than last year. Winter barley did not survive. Results of 3 – 4 t/ha are almost the norm. Better results, even "approaching" 8 t/ha, appeared sporadically. So winter barley performs poorly in most cases. Maybe early wheat? Not really, because in many farms the earliest varieties did not reach 4 t/ha, and farmers themselves mentioned that even 3 t/ha was a problem. But barley and very early wheat varieties in the south-western regions also had numerous problems during the growing season, we have already written about this in more detail. Maybe rapeseed? Unfortunately, there's nothing crazy about it either.

There is oil and low humidity

We have mentioned many times how various factors will affect the reduction of winter rapeseed yield this season, so let's focus only on the results. So first something positive. The oil level is high and high. In fact, the norm this season is an oil level of over 42 percent, and often these results are at the level of 44 – 46 percent. Of course, there are even better oiling parameters.

The moisture content of mown rapeseed is low. On Saturday evening, after a windy and hot day, the seeds contained up to 5%. humidity. On Sunday, the combine harvesters stayed on the farms because the weather prevented harvesting, but harvesting continued on Monday. Already around noon, goods with a moisture content of around 100% were delivered to collection points, and in the evening even 6-7%. Sure, there are higher humidity readings, especially from the strongest locations, but these are also below 9%.

Crops start from a low ceiling

And coming to the point. Yields in the region differ from last year's, and if the results are averaged, they will also be lower than two years ago. In conversations with farmers, we often hear that this year is bad. Rapeseed usually falls in the range of 2.2 – 2.9 t/ha. Results above 3 t/ha are unfortunately not very common. Although of course they are. On better soils, but also on medium ones, with intensive protection, it is sometimes possible to obtain yields of 3.3 – 3.7 t/ha. But the potential of such positions with good agricultural technology is higher. However, yields above 4 t/ha are almost ephemeral phenomena. On soils with a potential of 4.5 – 5 t/ha in "normal" years, the yield is 3.6 – 3.8 t/ha.

Results below 2 t/ha appear quite frequently, on a much wider scale than in previous years. Very often we hear about results of 1.4 – 1.5 t/ha. And there are also single ones, around a tonne per hectare, and such low results are a combination of many unfavorable factors.

Summa summarum, however, the yields differ from those obtained in previous years. And while you can actually get "something more" from better locations, these are only substitutes for what could have been done if there had not been a series of not so much frosts, but practically frosts, in April during flowering – especially in the case of intensive technologies, where rapeseeds promised very good results. Drought and exceptionally intense feeding of stem beetles also contributed a few cents.
