Rapeseed covered in whitefly. How to combat this pest?

Rzepak oblepiony mączlikiem. Jak walczyć z tym szkodnikiem?
  • Vegetable whitefly is a thermophilic pest. High temperatures favor it and then it creates more generations.
  • Like aphids, whitefly sucks the sap from plants and weakens seedling vigour. It is especially dangerous in the young stages of rape. In later stages, it does not play a major role.
  • The fight against it is limited due to the small number of active substances available.

In the center of Poland and in Kujawy, vegetable whitefly has appeared in young crops. It flies from self-sown rapeseed to new plantations and inhabits them. There are fields where there are already several pests on the first true leaves and on each plant.

Small white pests in rapeseed

Adults resemble small white butterflies, although they are a completely different group of insects. Whiteflies, like aphids, belong to the hemiptera. They have piercing-sucking mouthparts with which they suck out plant juices. In addition to adults, larvae and nymphs are also harmful. As a result of this pest feeding, plant growth is inhibited, which has an additional great significance in the face of a dry period.

The whitefly is very fertile. The female can lay up to 100-150 eggs. It also creates several generations during the season. At a temperature of 26-28°C, the development time lasts about 20 days, and at a temperature of 16°C it extends to 47-48 days. Therefore, the warmer the population grows faster.

When to combat whiteflies in rapeseed?

Rapeseed has emerged and due to the crusting and drought, not evenly everywhere. This raises concerns about maintaining the target stock. Therefore, pest control is of great importance here. Strong plants will be able to compensate for the losses in stock.

Pests are particularly dangerous at the beginning of vegetation. In vegetable crops it is considered one of the most difficult pests to control and the economic threshold of damage is set at 2 individuals per 1 cm2 of leaf. In rapeseed it is most often controlled when other pests appear on the plantation (aphids, diamondback moth, cabbage stem fly, etc.). It is a thermophilic insect, therefore cooling significantly reduces its activity and frosts usually interrupt its development.

How to combat whiteflies in rapeseed?

There are currently only 6 products registered against whiteflies in rapeseed. 3 of them are mixtures of acetamiprid and lambda-cyhalothrin, the rest are biologically active agents containing the Beauveria bassiana strain or potassium salt of fatty acids.

Contact pyrethroids will not cope with individuals living on the underside of leaves. In vegetable crops (e.g. cabbage), a larger number of active substances are registered, such as: flonicamid, cyantraniliprole, spirotetramat and even orange oil. Unfortunately, due to the lack of registration, they cannot be used in rapeseed cultivation.
