Rapeseed contamination can significantly reduce the purchase price

Zanieczyszczenia rzepaku mogą znacznie obniżyć cenę w skupie
  • Pollution deduction rates are not low.
  • What is the base level of contamination in rapeseed?

Any contaminants can be a problem

Rapeseed contamination is divided into useful and unusable. The first ones include: halves of seeds, but also seeds that are not yet ripe. Some studies show that mechanical damage of up to 15% may occur already during harvesting. Even more damage occurs during the drying stage. That is why it is so important to set the combine harvester during harvesting to reduce seed damage as much as possible.

Regardless of whether we are talking about useful or unusable impurities – each of them reduces the quality of the raw material, although the quality is worse in the case of unusable impurities. Let us note here that even halves of seeds, as well as crushed or stripped seeds, are a breeding ground for microorganisms. Research shows that oil from seeds with a high proportion of damaged seeds may have a lower durability, and the refining process itself is more expensive.

Weed contamination is a very big problem, especially since some weed seeds are difficult to separate (e.g. bedstraw and rapeseed seeds are similar in size).

Severe deductions for higher levels of rapeseed contamination

The generally accepted pollution standard is 2%. Deductions apply above these values. Some purchasing companies will collect rapeseed even with a contamination level above 6% (of course, after deductions), but there are also situations when purchasing companies are interested in seeds with a contamination level of e.g. up to 4% (with deductions starting from 2%).

Pollution deduction rates are an individual matter and companies decide on their level themselves. For example, you may encounter deductions of 0.2% of the amount for every 0.1%. pollution above the norm. If the price is PLN 2,000/t, in the case of a product with 2.5% contamination, a total of PLN 20 will be deducted from the valuation per ton (1%). Higher deductions may apply to rapeseed with contamination, e.g. 4.5%. Then, higher deduction amounts are sometimes applied, even 0.3 – 0.4 percent for each 0.1 point above the base value. In a similar situation, even PLN 200 would be deducted from the price (a ton after deductions would cost not PLN 2,000, but PLN 1,800).

So, in the case of a large amount of contamination, the losses can be quite severe. Remember that a larger number of halves (which will be classified as impurities) will characterize very dry rapeseed. We already had such examples last season. Plantations mowed at 8 – 9 percent humidity. had contamination of 0.5 – 1 percent, and rapeseed mown from the same field later, at a humidity of about 6 percent. it already had a higher level of pollution, even above 2%.
